This simple and complete guide will take you through all you need to get started chatting with this AI to chatting with it like a pro.

So, Whether you need a quick answer, a help with a project, or just want to have fun, this blog post will keep you covered.

What is ChatGPT?

open ai chatgpt

First things first, let’s keep it simple. ChatGPT is an ai chatbot created by OpenAI on November 30, 2022, and the model was GPT-3.

What is GPT? It’s a Generative Pre-trained Transformer, a heavy word? Right. This means it is trained on a lot of data so that it can predict the next word, precisely.

And after its release it is doing that very well and even OpenAI enhanced it a lot by then.

Okay, so what it can do? It can understand and generate text that sounds like a human based on what we write to it.

So, you can ask it stuff, and it’ll answer like you’re talking to a real person or an expert (using a persona pattern).

Now the question is, how do you actually start using it? Let’s quickly see that.

How to Use ChatGPT? – A Quick Guide

  1. Open the Platform:
    • Visit chat.openai.com or download the ChatGPT app on your smartphone and complete the chat gpt login process.
    • Sign in if you already have an account, or sign up to create an account (new one).
  2. Type Your Query:
    • Once logged in, find the message box typically located at the bottom of the ChatGPT homepage.
    • Enter your question or command clearly. Whether it’s asking for information, advice, or help with a specific task, just type it in.
  3. Receive Insightful Responses:
    • After submitting your query, ChatGPT will process it based on a vast database of information and generate a response that appears directly below your question.
  4. Engage Further with ChatGPT:
    • Continue the Dialogue: Don’t stop at one question. Keep the conversation going with follow-up questions or new topics.
    • Regenerate Responses: Not satisfied with the answer? Use the regenerate option to ask ChatGPT to provide a different answer.
    • Utilize Interaction Tools: You can copy the response to your clipboard, share it with others, or express your reaction by liking or disliking the response.

A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Step –> 1: Make an Account if not.

Head on to the OpenAI’s official website (openai.com). Then scroll down all the way to the bottom where there is a button named “Try ChatGPT“.

pressing try chat gpt button

Now, Hit the Sign up button if you don’t have an account, or the login if you already have an account.

hit that signup button

After filling in a few details (only for new users), you’re set up to use ChatGPT.

Additional Info. – You have the option to sign up using a Google or Microsoft account, providing users with alternative sign-in methods alongside the traditional email address and password or an Apple account.

Step –> 2: Explore ChatGPT.

If you’re a totally new user or returning one after a long time, you’ll see lots of new changes in ChatGPT.

chat gpt first screen

First, there is a big Chat section as “Message ChatGPT” above where you can see 4 random pre-prompted chats, Just For new user interaction.

At the top, there is something written as ChatGPT 3.5. What does that mean? It is the ChatGPT model you’re interacting with.

This version allows users to access and manage their chat history, including the ability to view previous conversations, share them with others, or delete them entirely.

And if you click on that you’ll see Another Model – GPT 4 which is a paid version with access to Web Browsing, Dalle-3, Custom GPTs, and in the future Sora.

It costs $20/month with a limitation of 40 messages in 3 hours.

At the leftmost bottom, we have the Upgrade plan section from where you can buy GPT-4.

Just below that we have our account settings. And if you click on that, we have something called “Customize ChatGPT“.

What is it? Click it na. Here you can tell ChatGPT about yourself, what you do, and in what manner you want it to respond.

This section is there to provide more useful responses according to users’ needs, so be clear, true, and concise with it.

For example:

After hitting that save button, let’s ask chatgpt a simple question and see how it will respond.

See pretty cool? Right. It remembers everything about me.

It’s just an example, you can play with it in as many ways as you want.

I will suggest please give it a try if you’re using the free version, it saves a lot of time.

At last, we have a settings section where we can change the theme (light to dark or vice versa), export, and delete our chats or even accounts.

Step –> 3: Write your first prompt.

Your first prompt shouldn’t meant to be perfect as there is magic in imperfection. Deep words? Haan.

No, I indeed remember when I started using ChatGPT, I asked random questions to it and then I gradually became good at it.

But, I will not recommend it now as it’s too late for that and some special prompts will help you start with a headstart.

My Special Starter Prompt:

Hey, ChatGPT act as a God Prompt Writer. Who has more than 5 years of experience with writing prompts. I will give you a query and you’ll provide me well-formatted prompt for it. Ask me whether I liked it or not and further refine it if my response is negative. Ask me for Query.

Here are chat links for better interaction:

Step –> 4: Rename or delete your chat.

I will strongly suggest renaming every chat for your better reference.

rename chats

For deleting simply hover over the chat click on horizontal three pins and then smash that delete button or for renaming simply hit that rename button and give a relevant name to your chat.

Difference between GPT-3.5 and GPT-4

In this section, I will tell you the key differences between ChatGPT models 3.5 and 4 so that you have a clear picture of taking or not taking the GPT-4 plan.

Difference #1:

GPT 3.5 is completely free whereas GPT 4 will cost you $20 a month.

Difference #2:

With normal ChatGPT (talking about the 3.5 model) there is no message limit to it but if you are using the premium GPT you’ll have to face a 40 messages per 3 hours limitation.

And Suppose you’ve asked chatgpt only one question and you came after three hours. Then, what’s the message limit now? It’s still going to be the same 40 messages, not 79.

This is a major downside for me (after paying $20) at the start but it’s manageable or upto your needs. I will suggest using it wisely not asking random stuff.

Difference #3:

As chatgpt itself says the 3.5 model is good for everyday tasks. It is, I will strongly recommend beginners to polish their skills here first as there is no limit to chat.

You can have as many conversations as you want but you’re not gonna have the latest info as gpt-3.5 is cut to the knowledge till January 2022.

chatgpt prompt

Where with gpt 4 you can access up-to-date information, and browse the web in real time with the help of Webpilot. Saving you a ton of time.

chatgpt prompt

Difference #4:

Unlike chatgpt-3.5, gpt 4 provides you with responses that are more straightforward, conversational, and less robotic.

Difference #5:

With gpt 4 you can use various types of custom GPTs out there for different purposes, a few of them are Chatgpt Classic, Dalle-3, Humanizer Pro, and many more.

custom gpts

Difference #6:

After the recent update to the gpt-4 model, it can automatically update its memory (through the new memory updated feature).

So now, the user doesn’t have to keep changing the “customize chatgpt” section manually which is really awesome but this feature is only accessible to gpt-4 users.

Additional info. – GPT-4 subscribers receive ‘priority access’ to new features and updates, ensuring they benefit from faster response times and the latest technology advancements.

Lastly, there is a key difference in understanding your prompt.

We’ll see this in-depth by trying the same prompt with both models in the next section and check if paying $20 a month is worth it or not.

Same Prompt Different Outcomes

Without delaying more let’s head onto our first prompt analysis.

Test Prompt#1:

Write a short story on a horse and a panda. Keep it short not more than 50 words, friendly, and valuable. You are writing it for the age group of 5 years. First, Tell me what you understand.

As you can see chat gpt-3.5 is making up things itself although I have only asked it “what you understand”.

It provides me with extra information which is not required at the moment. Whereas I loved the way gpt-4 responded, exactly answering my question and at last asking me for any specific theme I want to keep.

Test Prompt #2:

Can you explain the concept of time dilation in simple terms?

As we can clearly see the amount of jargon produced by the 3.5 model is pathetic.

Generally we humans want a cut-to-cut answer, which for gpt 3.5 is rarely possible if you haven’t prompted it that well.

Now, if we look at the gpt 4 response it’s much more straightforward plus has less jargon. Which makes it much more suitable for writing or gaining information about any topic you want.

So, after this short analysis, if you badly want to use chatgpt-4. I have something for you in the next section.

How to access Chat GPT 4 for FREE or in LESS price

With his heading the first question that comes to your mind would probably be “Is this possible”? So to answer that, Yes it is.

In fact, I am using it in the same way.

There are a few ways through which you can access chatgpt-4 for free but with some limits to it (like you can just chat (limited) with the model not more than that).

Way #1: You can use it with Microsoft’s Copilot, available on Bing Browser.

Way #2: You can access it with the site named “you.com”. Here you will get 5 messages/ day.

Way #3: You can head to chatgate.ai and have access to chatgpt 4 for free. But for this one, I am not that sure so I won’t recommend it.

These ways are for those who just want to play with gpt-4, but if you want to use it in your day-to-day work, I recommend buying it from the official openai site.

Now for those, $20 is a huge amount they can go with a cheaper yet premium version available on toolsrise.com. There you can have it just for Rs. 299 only or 3.57 dollars to be precise.

The only drawback is there are other members too accessing it at the same time so you will not be going to get 40 messages/ 3 hours.

But, trust me, there are 3 servers, and I haven’t regretted buying it.

How to write a Prompt like a PRO

The most important section of this blog post, here I am going to reveal some secrets related to prompt engineering. And if you follow them you will become a pro that writing prompts.

Step Number 1: Have a clear idea of your goal. What that means is “ask yourself what you want from chatgpt”.

Step Number 2: After getting a clear idea of what you want, select the persona if so. Use “act as a/an [persona]” to use the persona pattern.

I will strongly suggest using the persona pattern as it is one of the best and most useful among other prompt patterns.

Step Number 3: Set how well the persona knows that particular thing (add quality to your persona).

For example – act as a professional chef who has more than a decade of experience in the Indian style of cooking.

Here, I have used the professional chef’s persona and added a quality to the persona.

Step Number 4: Tell the persona what you exactly want from it. Here is how the above prompt will look like after adding this step:

Act as a professional chef who has more than a decade of experience in the Indian style of cooking. I will give you the name of the Indian dish and you’ll provide me the whole recipe and ingredients to make that dish at home.

Step Number 5: Tell chatgpt to ask you whether you liked the response or not followed by asking for the dish’s name that you want to make.

The final prompt will look like this:

Act as a professional chef who has more than a decade of experience in the Indian style of cooking. I will give you the name of the Indian dish and you’ll provide me the whole recipe and ingredients to make that dish at home. At last, ask me whether the method is suitable for me or not. If not suggest me the alternative ways to make that dish. Ask me the dish’s name.

For your reference here’s the chat link

With this 5 step prompt writing process you will surely start writing great prompts but to become a pro you must know other prompt patterns as well.

So, In the next section, I am going to cover some important/must-prompt patterns for you.

Must-know Prompt Patterns

The above final prompt that I have provided you is a “Persona Prompt Pattern” and there are a lot more prompt patterns like this.

Prompt patterns are the different ways of talking to ChatGPT so that it can provide us with better responses.

Here are some of the best prompt patterns that you will need to become a pro in prompt engineering:

Number 1: Ask for Input Pattern

To use this pattern, your prompt should go like this:

Ask me for input X

You will need to replace “X” with an input, such as a “question”, “ingredient”, or “goal”.

For example:

From now on, I am going to cut/paste email chains into our conversation. You will summarize what each person’s points are in the email chain. You will provide your summary as a series of sequential bullet points. At the end, list any open questions or action items directly addressed to me. My name is Saransh. Ask me for the first email chain.

Number 2: Audience Persona Pattern

To use this pattern, your prompt should go like this:

Explain X to me.

Assume that I am Persona Y

You will need to replace “Y” with an appropriate persona, such as “5-year-old boy/girl” or “CEO of XYZ company”.

You will then need to specify the topic X that should be explained.

For example:

Explain SEO to me. Assume that I am a footballer

Number 3: Fact Check List Pattern

To use this pattern, your prompt should go like this:

Generate a set of facts that are contained in the output

The set of facts should be inserted at POSITION in the output

The set of facts should be the fundamental facts that could undermine the veracity of the output if any of them are incorrect

You will need to replace POSITION with an appropriate place to put the facts, such as “at the end of the output”.

Example:

Whenever you output text, generate a set of facts that are contained in the output. The set of facts should be inserted at the end of the output. The set of facts should be the fundamental facts that could undermine the veracity of the output if any of them are incorrect.

Number 4: Question Refinement Pattern

To use this pattern, your prompt should go like this:

From now on, whenever I ask a question, suggest a better version of the question to use instead

(Optional) Prompt me if I would like to use the better version instead

Tailored Example:

Whenever I ask a question about dieting, suggest a better version of the question that emphasizes healthy eating habits and sound nutrition. Ask me for the first question to refine.

Number 5: Flipped Interaction Pattern

To use this pattern, your prompt should go like this:

I would like you to ask me questions to achieve X

You should ask questions until condition Y is met or to achieve this goal (alternatively, forever)

(Optional) ask me the questions one at a time, two at a time, ask me the first question, etc.

You will need to replace “X” with an appropriate goal, such as “creating a meal plan”.

Then, ” You should specify when to stop asking questions with Y. Example is “until you know what I like to eat and my caloric targets.”

For Example:

I would like you to ask me questions to help me diagnose a problem with my Internet. Ask me questions until you have enough information to identify the two most likely causes. Ask me one question at a time. Ask me the first question.

Number 6: Gameplay Pattern

To use this pattern, your prompt should go like this:

Create a game for me around X OR we are going to play an X game

One or more fundamental rules of the game

You will need to replace “X” with an appropriate game topic, such as “science quiz” or “complete the code to improve your coding skills”.

You will then need to provide rules for the game, such as “Provide me an incomplete code in [code language]” or “Ask me questions related to Physics and Chemistry, and increase my score every time I get one right.”

For Example:

Create a group party game for me involving DALL-E. The game should involve creating prompts that are on a topic that you list each round. Everyone will create a prompt and generate an image with DALL-E. People will then vote on the best prompt based on the image it generates. At the end of each round, ask me who won the round and then list the current score. Describe the rules and then list the first topic.

Special Keywords or Phrases – To Get Better Response From Chat GPT

I have prepared a special list of not more than 10 keywords or phrases for any beginner chatgpt user to get the most out of their prompt:
